The Israeli Minister of Education rejects a recommendation to award an “Israel Prize” to an academic, because of his opposition to the occupation

The Israeli Minister of Education, Yoav Galant, rejected a recommendation to award the “Israel Prize” in mathematics and computer science to the  Professor Oded Goldrich, insisting on a similar previous position that came in the wake of Goldrich’s signing of a petition calling the European Union to boycott the University of Ariel settlement in the occupied West Bank.

Galant made the final decision on the matter, rejecting the award committee’s recommendation to Goldreich, and said in a letter he sent to them, “This is the State of  Israel award for those who contributed to the establishment of  the State of  Israel.”

Gallant justified his decision by saying: “there is a clear view of Professor Goldrich’s continued, consistent and deliberate activity that has resulted in real harm to Israeli academics and the State of Israel.”

Galant added: “In light of all of the above, I have decided to reject the professional recommendation issued by the Israel Prize Committee of Computer Science Research… to award the prize to Professor Goldrich.”
