The Israeli occupation army kills a 16-year-old Palestinian boy in Al-Arroub refugee camp

The Israeli occupation army shot and killed a 16-year-old Palestinian boy on Saturday evening, 9-9-2023, in the southern occupied West Bank.

Milad Munther Wajih Al-Rai, 16 years, was wounded by a bullet in the back fired by the Israeli occupation army at the entrance to Al-Arroub refugee camp, near Hebron in the southern occupied West Bank, according to documents collected by Defense for Children International-Palestine. An Israeli soldier shot Milad in the back from a distance of about 20 meters. Milad was shot in the back and the bullet exploded inside his stomach, which led to severe internal bleeding.

“Palestinian children live in a highly militarized context, where Israeli army incursions into Palestinian communities to arrest and terrorize Palestinian civilians have become the norm,” said Ayed Abu Qutaish, Accountability Program Director at Defense for Children International. “Israeli forces routinely shoot to kill in situations not justified by international law, with complete impunity.”

Under international law, the intentional use of lethal force can only be justified in circumstances where there is an immediate threat to life or serious injury. However, investigations and evidence collected by Defense for Children International regularly indicate that Israeli forces use lethal force against Palestinian children in circumstances that may amount to extrajudicial killings or intentional killings.

According to documents collected by Defense for Children International. Israeli forces and settlers shot and killed at least 37 Palestinian children, 45 Palestinian children were killed in 2023, and 1 Palestinian child was killed in a drone strike in the occupied West Bank.

In 2022, 53 Palestinian children were killed according to documents collected by Defense for Children International, including 36 Palestinian children shot dead by Israeli forces or settlers in the occupied West Bank. Defense for Children International documented the killing of 17 Palestinian children between 5 and 7 August after Israeli forces launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
