Palestinian Prisoners – Numbers and Facts

The history of the Palestinian prisoner movement started with the beginning of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1948. The Israeli occupation authorities adopted the arrests as a policy, method and tool to suppress and control the Palestinian people and to spread terror and fear among all Palestinians. The arrests became an essential part of its policy in dealing with the Palestinians. They became a worrying daily phenomenon and a means of collective punishment, as no day passes without arrests.

  • A million Palestinians have experienced the arrest since the beginning of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1948
  • (215) prisoners were killed inside the prisons and hundreds of others after they were released
  • 6,500 prisoners and detainees were held in Israeli jails by late March 2018
  • 350 prisoners of children
  • (62) female prisoners including (21) mothers, and (8) minors
