Israel has been holding a 16.5-year-old Palestinian minor in administrative detention for six months, despite the fact that he suffers from a mental disability and does not realize that he is being held without trial, is unable to express himself, and suffers from isolation and violence inside the prison, according to his lawyer.
The lawyers Reham Nasra and Michal Fomerintz, who represent the minor, submitted a request to the Military Court of Appeals to reconsider his administrative detention, after the court had previously rejected a similar request.
The lawyers attached to the request a report from an institution in Bethlehem, which diagnosed the minor’s condition and cared for him, stating that the minor suffers from a mental disability and a low IQ. The report also indicated that the minor’s father suffers from epilepsy and psychological problems, that his mother suffers from kidney failure, and that the family’s economic situation is difficult.
The two lawyers added in the request that the minor suffers from difficulties in speaking and communicating with others, as well as epileptic seizures, and warned that his continued detention could worsen his condition. The Shin Bet claimed that following an assessment of the minor’s danger, it was determined that it was not possible to find an alternative to the minor’s detention or release, according to Haaretz.
